FAQS
We know parents, coaches, and players often have lots of questions when preparing for a weekend of grassroots football. To help, we’ve put together this guide covering everything from match rules and age groups to awards, schedules, and festival activities. Whether it’s your first time at the Penn Festival of Football or you’re a returning team, these FAQs have all the information you need to make the most of the weekend.
1. What type of tournament is this? + -
This is a grassroots tournament, focused on community football. Strictly no academies are allowed — it’s all about giving local young players the chance to enjoy competitive matches in a friendly environment.
2. How do we enter and register our team? + -
Teams should enter online here and make payment via our Tournify website. On the day of the tournament, managers must register their team at least 30 minutes before their first match, providing a full list of players including dates of birth to confirm eligibility.
3. What age groups are included? + -
Age groups follow the 2025/26 season, running from U5 through U14, including a girls’ team section.
4. What is the difference between Minors and Colts? + -
Minors generally play in Division 1 or 2 of their age group, while Colts include lower divisions or development squads. This split ensures matches are competitive and fair, matching teams against opponents of a similar standard. Please enter your team in the correct category.
5. How many players can we have in a squad? + -
Each team may register up to 8 players, and each player can only play for one team throughout the tournament.
6. How is the tournament structured? + -
U7 & U8: League format, with the top 2 teams progressing to a final. Both finalists receive a trophy.
U7–U9: All players receive a limited-edition FOF26 participation medal.
U9+ and mixed girls teams: League stages followed by knockout rounds, with both finalists receiving a trophy.
7. How many games will my team play? + -
Each team will play a minimum of 4 matches, depending on the number of teams in their age group and whether they progress to a final or knockout stage after completing their league fixtures.
8. What equipment is required? + -
All players must wear shin pads and football boots suitable for grass pitches. The first named team in each fixture provides the correct match ball. In case of a kit clash, the second named team should bring alternative shirts or bibs.
9. How long are matches and how are they played? + -
Matches are 10 minutes of continuous play, with no halves or change of ends unless stated on your group page.
Ball sizes:
U7–U10: Size 3
U11–U14: Size 4
10. Are there any special rules for younger players? + -
U7–U10 teams:
No heading; accidental headers result in an indirect free-kick.
No throw-ins; age-appropriate dribble-in or kick-in rules apply.
Goal kicks are taken from the goal area; goalkeepers are not allowed to drop kick in general play.
11. How are results and points decided? + -
Points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss.
Ties in league stages: goal difference → goals scored → penalty shootout.
Knockout matches: winner by goals scored; if equal, a penalty shootout decides.
12. Are substitutions allowed? + -
Yes. Substitutions are roll-on, roll-off from the squad of 8 and are unlimited, as long as the referee is informed.
13. What happens if a player receives a card? + -
Two yellow cards in one match = red card; player is sent off.
Two yellow cards across matches in one day = suspended for the next match.
Red cards (straight or for two yellows) mean the player cannot play further in the tournament.
All incidents are reported to the Berks & Bucks FA.
14. What food and entertainment are available for families? + -
There will be a fully-licensed bar, BBQ, stalls, and fun games, creating a lively festival atmosphere alongside the football action.
15. Is there an entrance fee for spectators? + -
Yes. The entrance fee for adults is £5. Under-18s can enter for free.
16. Is free parking available at the tournament? + -
