Adlam strikes late in Rayners Lane win

PENN & Tylers Green left it late but made it count, as Will Adlam’s 84th-minute strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rayners Lane at French School Meadow on Saturday afternoon.

With the sides level at the break, the contest remained finely poised heading into the closing stages. However, Penn found the breakthrough six minutes from time to claim all three points in front of the home supporters.

The two sides went in goalless at half-time, with neither able to find the decisive breakthrough during the opening 45 minutes.

Penn made an early change after the interval, with Lennon Moore replacing James Barnett at half-time as the hosts continued their search for a decisive goal.

Further substitutions followed in the second half, with Alfie Branwhite and Ben Sturgess introduced in the 73rd minute. And as the game entered its final stages, joint-managers Giovanni Sepede and James Pritchard turned to Adlam, who replaced Joel Ellis in the 83rd minute.

It proved to be an inspired change.

Just a minute after entering the action, Adlam got the final touch to a corner in the 84th minute to break the deadlock and send Penn into the lead. With time running out, the goal indeed proved decisive as the hosts held on to secure a valuable league victory.

A late goal, clean sheet and three points – Saturday afternoon at French School Meadow ended on a high for Penn, who travel to face Abingdon United on Tuesday.
