Berks and Bucks County Cup Second Round

We welcome our visitors, Wycombe Wanderers to French School Meadow for this evening’s Berks & Bucks Senior Cup match. This is the first meeting of our two clubs. Welcome to you all and I hope you enjoy your evening at Penn. Gio and Jim have done a tremendous job since they came back on board three years ago. We narrowly missed out on promotion via the play-offs last season and, so far, have only been beaten once in the league this time around. What is most pleasing is the development of our pathway over this period with well-established Allied Counties U18 and U23 teams feeding into our men’s first-team squad. Today we will have four players from last year’s successful Allied Counties provision in our matchday squad, which is a brilliant achievement for them and credit for the work our senior coaching team do week in, week out. Like all football clubs at our level, there are a group of hard-working volunteers working behind the scenes to make our club successful and I want to acknowledge their work and pass on our thanks and appreciation for everything they do. I would also like to thank all our sponsors, without whose support we would not be able to do what we do. Enjoy the match, and COYP!

THE OPPOSITION

About Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe Wanderers FC, founded in 1887 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, is one of England’s most remarkable underdog football stories. Originally formed by a group of furniture-makers (reflecting the town’s chair-making heritage), the club spent much of its early existence in amateur and non-league football, playing at Loakes Park for over 90 years.

Wycombe joined the Isthmian League in 1921, becoming one of its dominant sides and winning multiple titles, especially under manager Brian Lee in the 1970s. Their big breakthrough came in the 1990s under Martin O’Neill, who guided the club through two successive promotions: from the Conference (now National League) in 1993 into the Football League, and then up to the Third Division (League One today). O’Neill also led Wycombe to an FA Trophy victory in 1991 and established the club’s reputation for strong cup performances and passionate support.

The club moved to Adams Park in 1990, which remains its home ground. Over the following decades, Wycombe became known as a well-run, community-oriented team punching above its weight. Memorable moments include reaching the FA Cup semi-final in 2001 (a narrow defeat to Liverpool) under Lawrie Sanchez, and achieving several promotions and relegations between League One and League Two.

Under Gareth Ainsworth, manager from 2012 to 2023, Wycombe enjoyed a golden modern era—culminating in promotion to the Championship in 2020, the club’s highest ever level. Though they were relegated after one season, the achievement cemented their reputation as one of English football’s great overachievers.

Today, Wycombe Wanderers continue to embody resilience, community spirit, and ambition, proudly maintaining their identity as “the Chairboys”—a small club with a big heart and a history of defying the odds.
