THE OPPOSITION

About Thatcham Town

Thatcham Town Football Club, nicknamed ‘The Kingfishers’ (and also ‘The Blues’), was founded in 1894 and originally known simply as Thatcham, adding ‘Town’ to its name in 1974. The club played only friendlies in its earliest years before joining the Reading Temperance League in 1896, where it remained for around 57 years.

Thatcham were a founder member of the Hellenic League in 1953 and won three Division One titles to earn promotion to the Premier Division, taking the Hellenic League championship and Premier Division Cup double in 1974/75. Later spells followed in the Athenian, London Spartan and Wessex Leagues, the last of which the club won in 1995/96.

Thatcham Town spent time in the Southern League between 2006 and 2014 and won the Hellenic League Premier Division title in 2017/18, the same season it captured the FA Vase with a 1-0 victory over Stockton Town at Wembley Stadium. The club has also collected the Basingstoke Senior Cup on several occasions.

Thatcham play their home matches at Waterside Park, which opened in 1992 and holds around 1,500 spectators.
