Throw-In bounce round the corner

A clever attacking throw-in that goes round the corner. A midfielder disguises it, looking uninterested, then comes alive and checks to the thrower calling for the ball. He takes the throw and, first time, plays it round the corner into a forward who has peeled 5 yards off his marker. Straight away the midfielder arcs his run round the back and attacks the goal; the forward turns out if he is free, or lays it back for the arcing runner to finish. A one-two round the corner from a throw, straight into a shooting chance.

Objective

Create a shooting chance straight from a throw-in: disguise the movement, play first time round the corner into a forward who has made space, and arrive late with an arcing run to finish.

Set up

An attacking throw-in in the final third. The thrower is on the line with the ball. A midfielder starts near the thrower (looking uninterested), a forward starts higher ready to peel off his marker, with defenders marking. Walk the timing through first: the check, the first-time pass round the corner, the forward's 5-yard run, and the arcing overlap, then add the defenders.

Coaching points

  • Disguise it: look uninterested, then come alive and check hard to the thrower, calling for the ball.
  • Play it first time, round the corner, into the forward's feet, not to a standing player.
  • The forward times his 5-yard run to peel off his marker as the ball comes in.
  • The instant you've played it round the corner, arc your run round the back and attack the goal.
  • The forward turns out if he is free, or lays it back first time for the arcing runner to finish.

Progressions

  • Walk it through with no defenders first, then add the markers, then make it fully live.
  • The forward takes a touch to turn if he's marked, or sets it first time if the runner is on.
  • Switch it to the other touchline so players run it both ways.
  • Add a recovering defender so the finish has to be quick.
  • Vary the finish: a first-time shot, a cutback to the arcing runner, or a drive to the byline.
