Shooting Sin Bin

A competitive shooting game (Dan's own). Two teams, one goal with a keeper. Each turn a player gets two shots fed from behind the goal. Score none and you are in the sin bin; score one and you go to the back of your queue; score both and you choose: send an opponent to the sin bin, or free one of your own team-mates. A team wins when the other team has no players left.

Shooting Sin Bin diagram

Step by step

1
A player steps out; the server feeds two balls (one at a time) from behind the goal, about 15 to 18 yards out: (1) take a touch then shoot, (2) first time, no touch.
2
Score none of the two and you go to the sin bin. Score one and you go to the back of your own queue.
3
Score both and you choose: send an opposition player to the sin bin, or bring one of your own players back out of it.
4
Two teams take turns. The winning team is the one that eliminates the other: when a team has every player in the sin bin with none left out, the team that still has players standing wins.

Objective

A fun, competitive finish: take your two chances well, strike cleanly off a touch and then first time, and earn the right to bin an opponent or rescue a team-mate.

Set up

One goal with a goalkeeper (rotate two keepers if they want a turn each). A feeder, usually a coach, stands behind the goal line with a supply of balls. The two teams queue around 15 to 18 yards out, nudged in or out for age. A marked 'sin bin' area off to the side holds the players who are out.

Coaching points

  • Shot one: a positive first touch out of your feet, then shoot, do not take too many touches.
  • Shot two: get your body set early so you can strike it first time, laces through the middle of the ball.
  • Check the keeper's position before you shoot and pick your spot.
  • Head still, eyes on the ball at contact, then follow your shot in.
  • Keep the queue loud and competitive, it is a game.

Progressions

  • Move the shooting line out for older players, in for younger ones.
  • Weak foot only, or alternate feet across the two shots.
  • Shot two is served moving across the box (a cutback) to make first-time striking harder.
  • Two keepers compete: whoever concedes fewer stays in goal.
