Protect The Cone

A 5v2 possession game (from SoccerDrive). Five attackers keep the ball around the outside while two defenders in the middle protect a big cone. The attackers move the ball quickly to shift the defenders, then strike the ball to hit the cone and score. Lose the ball and you swap into the middle. It sharpens passing to move defenders, decision-making and first-time striking.

Step by step

1
Five attackers around the outside, two defenders in the middle guarding a big cone. Keep the ball away from the defenders.
2
Pass to move the defenders and open a line to the cone, quick and first time.
3
When the line opens, strike the ball and hit the centre cone to score.
4
Lose the ball and you go into the middle (with a partner), so everyone gets a turn defending.

Objective

Keep possession under pressure and strike the central cone: move the ball to shift the two defenders, spot the gap, and hit the cone first time.

Set up

A circle roughly 12 to 15 yards across. Five attackers spread around the outside, two defenders inside, and a large cone (or a stack of cones) in the very centre as the target. Seven players; scale the area and numbers for your group.

Coaching points

  • Use your passes to move the defenders, not just to keep the ball.
  • Heads up and decide early: pass to keep it, or strike if the line to the cone is open.
  • Strike the cone first time when you can, a firm, accurate pass.
  • Support at an angle so there is always an easy pass on both sides of you.
  • Defenders stay compact and protect the cone, do not dive in.

Progressions

  • Limit the attackers to two touch, then one touch, to speed it up.
  • Make the centre area bigger or smaller, or add a second cone to defend.
  • A point for hitting the cone; the defenders win a point for a clean interception.
  • Whoever loses the ball goes into the middle with a partner, as the coach directs.
