Name & Pass

A simple circle passing warm-up (Dan's own). The whole group stands in one big circle with two balls going at the same time. Before you pass, you shout the name of the player you are passing to, then follow your pass and run across to take their place. It keeps the whole circle moving: lots of touches, heads up, and plenty of loud communication, with no teams and no goals.

Step by step

1
The whole group spreads out in a big circle. Start with two balls on opposite sides of the circle.
2
Before you pass, look up and shout the name of the player you are passing to, loud and clear. As soon as you have passed, follow your pass: run across and take their place in the circle.
3
Pass across or around the circle, not just to your neighbour. Receive, look up, pick someone new and call their name.
4
Keep both balls going at once. Keep it loud and keep moving, it is a warm-up to wake everyone up.

Objective

Warm the group up with lots of passes, movement and loud talking: call the receiver's name before every pass so heads come up and players communicate.

Set up

The whole group in one big circle, well spread out, an arm's length or two apart. Start with two balls, given to players on opposite sides of the circle. No teams, no goals, everyone works together.

Coaching points

  • Call the name loud and clear before you pass, make eye contact first.
  • Pass with the side of the foot, firm and along the ground so it is easy to control.
  • Receive across your body with a positive first touch, then look up for your next pass.
  • Do not always pass to the player next to you, switch it across the circle.
  • Stay alert and keep moving on the spot, with two balls it can come to you any time.
  • Follow your pass every time: pass, then move across to take their place, do not stand and watch it.

Progressions

  • Add a second word after the name (a colour, or 'yes') so they talk a little more.
  • Add a third ball once the group is comfortable.
  • Two touch, then one touch, to speed it up.
  • Reverse it: call the name of the player you want it FROM, then show for the pass.
