Head tennis

Tennis, but with a football. Two teams either side of a line, get the ball over into the other court. A brilliant, simple fun game for working the first touch.

Head tennis diagram

Step by step

1
Two teams, one each side of the line. Serve the ball over into the other court.
2
The ball can bounce once on your side before you must send it back over the line. For younger groups play that you can get another bounce if you get a touch in so it renews the bounce.
3
Two bounces, out, or not clearing the line is a point to the other team. The team that won the point serves next.
Age group
Young (U5 to U8), Mid (U9 to U13), Older (U14 to U18)
Duration
10 to 15 mins
Players
3v3 is ideal. Works with smaller numbers too (2v2 or 1v1).
Area
A small court split in half by a line, scaled to the age and numbers. A low net if you have one, otherwise a row of cones.
Equipment
A ball, and cones or a line to mark the court and the halfway line (a low net if you have one).

Objective

Practise a clean, controlled touch (head, chest, a cushioned volley) in a fun, competitive game.

Set up

A small court split in two by a line (a low net or a row of cones). A team each side, 3v3 is ideal. Scale the court to the age and numbers.

Coaching points

  • Soft, controlled touches to keep the ball playable for your team.
  • Talk and move to cover your side of the court.

Progressions

  • For the really young: a touch renews the bounce, so after a touch they get another bounce and more time on the ball.
  • Make it harder: no bounce at all, straight back over, or a bigger court and smaller teams.
