Attacking Decisions

A 2v1 attacking game all about decision-making. From a triangle of cones outside the box the back player passes and joins in, making it 2v1 against the defender; the attacker reads the defender and decides, shoot early if the defender has not got across, take him on, or play the 2v1 to the supporting player.

Step by step

1
The player on the back cone passes to the right and follows to support, so it is 2v1.
2
The player on the left is the defender: he sprints across to block the player on the right.
3
The attacker decides: shoot early, take the defender on, or play the 2v1 back to the supporting player.
4
A group on each cone; rotate after each go so everyone attacks and defends.

Objective

Decision-making in attack: read the defender and pick the best option, shoot early when he has not got across, beat him 1v1, or play the 2v1. In the end, attacking, defending, passing and shooting all come down to the right decision at the right time.

Set up

Half a pitch, attacking one goal with a keeper. Three cones in a triangle outside the box: two near the edge of the D (left and right) and one about ten yards further back (the point). A group of players on each cone.

Coaching points

  • Head up as you receive, read the defender BEFORE you decide
  • If the defender has not got across, shoot early, do not wait for him
  • If he commits to you, beat him 1v1 or slide the 2v1 pass to your support
  • The supporting player gives a clear angle and calls for it
  • There is no single right answer, it is about picking the best option for that moment

Progressions

  • Start to the left or the right at random, so the picture (and the decision) changes each time
  • Put a time limit on it to force a quicker decision
  • Let the defender start closer or further away to change how much time the attacker has
  • Two-touch for the attackers to sharpen the decision
