Any Three Goals

A fun 5v5 small-sided game (from SoccerDrive), great for all ages. Each team defends three small goals on its own end line and can score in any of the three at the other end, with no keepers. With three goals to aim at, it is all about switching the ball to the open goal, and defenders shifting across to cover rather than camping on one. Score and the coach feeds a new ball straight to the team that conceded; first to three goals wins.

Objective

Use the three goals: move the ball to attack whichever goal is open, and defend by shifting across to cover all three rather than standing on one.

Set up

Two teams play 5v5 on a small field. Set up three small goals on each end line (six in total), no goalkeepers. A team can score in any of the three goals it is attacking. Players cannot just stand in front of a goal to block it. When a team scores, the coach immediately plays a new ball to the team that was scored on. Games are played to three goals. 10 players.

Coaching points

  • Heads up and pick the open goal, switch the ball fast to the one the defenders have left.
  • Do not force one goal, if it is covered, move the ball and attack another.
  • Defend as a unit: shift across together to cover all three goals, do not ball-watch or camp on one.
  • React instantly to the restart, the coach feeds a ball the moment a goal goes in.
  • Spread out in attack so all three goals are a threat.

Progressions

  • Must complete a set number of passes before you can score.
  • Add a two-touch limit to speed up the switching.
  • Make the middle goal worth two to pull them in, or the outer goals worth two to force width.
